COLOMBO, Nov. 13 (Xinhua) -- Sri Lanka's Parliament will convene on Wednesday after it remained shut for over two weeks following a prorogation issued by President Maithripala Sirisena, the Speaker's office said in a notice issued late Tuesday.

Speaker of Parliament, Karu Jayasuriya, in a statement informed all legislators in the 225-member House to be present for the Parliamentary session on Wednesday morning during which crucial decisions are expected to be taken.

Jayasuriya's statement was issued hours after the Supreme Court suspended President Sirisena's decision to dissolve Parliament and call for a snap parliamentary poll on Jan. 5, 2019.

Several political parties had filed petitions in the Supreme Court, against the dissolution saying the president had "violated the Constitution" by calling for an early election.

Sri Lanka has been embroiled in a severe political turmoil, when on Oct. 26, the president surprisingly sacked his Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe and appointed former President Mahinda Rajapakse to the post.
