BOGOTA, Jan. 14 (Xinhua) -- Colombian President Gustavo Petro confirmed on Wednesday that his meeting with U.S. President Donald Trump is scheduled for Feb. 3 at the White House.

Petro told a publicly broadcast cabinet meeting that the date was set following diplomatic exchanges between the two governments, highlighting its importance in addressing ongoing issues between the United States and Colombia, particularly drug trafficking.

This will be the first in-person meeting between the two leaders since Trump returned to office.

Trump had earlier expressed anticipation for a January meeting, noting that drug prevention would be a key topic. He praised Petro after a phone call on Jan. 7, emphasizing the desire for future talks.

The United States has recently increased pressure on countries in Latin America over narcotics and security issues, with Trump targeting Petro on drug-related matters. On Jan. 4, Trump issued a threat toward Petro, saying that taking action against Colombia "sounds good."

Petro responded the following day on social media, saying that in the face of Trump's "illegal threats," he would be prepared to "take up again the weapons that no one wants to touch."

Petro emphasized that the upcoming meeting is crucial for ensuring the safety of Colombians. ■
