SINGAPORE, June 20 (Xinhua) -- Singapore will launch a national Familial Hypercholesterolaemia (FH) genetic testing program on June 30 to identify individuals with the condition early and reduce the risk of premature heart disease, the Ministry of Health said on Thursday.

According to the ministry's press release, three genomic assessment centers will be established. Singaporean citizens and permanent residents with abnormally high cholesterol levels may be referred to these centers by their doctors.

Eligible individuals will receive government subsidies for the tests conducted at these centers, the ministry added.

FH is a hereditary disorder that impairs the body's ability to process cholesterol properly. It is estimated to affect about 20,000 people in Singapore. Individuals with FH face a significantly increased risk of experiencing heart attacks at a younger age compared to the general population.

Those who test positive are encouraged to inform their immediate family members, who may also be at risk and should consider undergoing genetic testing, the ministry said. ■
