MOSCOW, July 23 (Xinhua) -- The death toll from the fire that broke out early Tuesday at a children's camp in the Khabarovsk region in Russia's Far East rose to four, local media reports said.

"There are now four deceased," as two girls and one boy died in hospital, the TASS news agency reported, citing a spokesperson for the regional government.

The three children, of six hospitalized in total, had been in a critical condition.

Earlier, the Russian Health Ministry said in a statement that a girl was killed and 12 other people including seven children were injured in the camp fire.

The Khabarovsk regional division of the Russian Emergencies Ministry said that there were 189 children in the camp when the fire broke out in the morning.

The fire burned down 20 tents and damaged six others before being put out by local firefighters, it said.

According to the Russian Investigative Committee, a criminal case was suspected in connection with the camp fire, and it has ordered "a comprehensive and objective investigation" of the incident.
